Croatian VAT number check
Check a Croatian supplier's or customer's number against VIES, the European Commission's register. Below: the format, what it's called locally, and the mistakes that make a correct number fail.
Paste the number with or without the country prefix. Nothing you enter is stored.
The format
| Prefix | HR |
|---|---|
| After the prefix | 11 digits |
| Structure | One block of 11 digits. |
| Example | HR12345678901 |
You can paste the number with spaces, dots or dashes; the checker removes them.
What it's called
PDV identifikacijski broj (PDV ID broj). PDV is the Croatian name for VAT.
The VAT number is HR followed by the 11-digit OIB, the personal identification number every person and business in Croatia has.
Registered, but invalid in VIES?
Because everyone has an OIB, HR plus an OIB is only valid in VIES when the holder has been identified for VAT.
What trips people up
- An OIB on an invoice tells you who the business is, not that it is registered for VAT. Check the HR number in VIES.
Other ways to check
VIES is the check to rely on for cross-border trade. The number is issued by Porezna uprava (Tax Administration); if a correct number keeps showing invalid, the business has to take it up with them.
