Estonian VAT number check
Check an Estonian supplier's or customer's number against VIES, the European Commission's register. Below: the format, what it's called locally, and the mistakes that make a correct number fail.
Paste the number with or without the country prefix. Nothing you enter is stored.
The format
| Prefix | EE |
|---|---|
| After the prefix | 9 digits |
| Structure | One block of 9 digits. |
| Example | EE123456789 |
You can paste the number with spaces, dots or dashes; the checker removes them.
What it's called
Käibemaksukohustuslasena registreerimise number, shortened to KMKR number.
The KMKR number is issued on VAT registration. It is not the 8-digit commercial registry code (registrikood), and a company can have a registry code without a VAT number.
What trips people up
- Partners often send their 8-digit registry code when asked for a VAT number. Look the company up in EMTA's search to find the KMKR number.
- Businesses below Estonia's registration threshold may have no VAT number at all.
Other ways to check
EMTA VAT number search: Search by registry code, personal code or VAT number. For cross-border trade, the VIES result above is the one to keep with your VAT records.
