Czech VAT number check
Check a Czech supplier's or customer's number against VIES, the European Commission's register. Below: the format, what it's called locally, and the mistakes that make a correct number fail.
Paste the number with or without the country prefix. Nothing you enter is stored.
The format
| Prefix | CZ |
|---|---|
| After the prefix | 8, 9 or 10 digits |
| Structure | One block of 8, 9 or 10 digits. |
| Examples | CZ12345678 or CZ1234567890 |
You can paste the number with spaces, dots or dashes; the checker removes them.
What it's called
Daňové identifikační číslo (DIČ), tax identification number.
For companies, the DIČ is CZ followed by the 8-digit company identification number (IČO). For individuals it was usually the birth number; since 2021 they can ask for a number assigned by the tax authority instead.
What trips people up
- For Czech domestic purchases, a valid DIČ is not the end of it. If the supplier is flagged as an unreliable payer, or you pay to an account it hasn't published, you can be liable for its VAT.
- Individuals could swap a birth-number DIČ for an assigned one from 2021, once only. An individual supplier's number may have changed.
Other ways to check
Registr plátců DPH (VAT payer register): Shows whether a payer is flagged as unreliable and which bank accounts it has published. For cross-border trade, the VIES result above is the one to keep with your VAT records.
