EU VAT number checker

Slovak VAT number check

Check a Slovak supplier's or customer's number against VIES, the European Commission's register. Below: the format, what it's called locally, and the mistakes that make a correct number fail.

Paste the number with or without the country prefix. Nothing you enter is stored.

The format

PrefixSK
After the prefix10 digits
StructureOne block of 10 digits.
ExampleSK1234567890

You can paste the number with spaces, dots or dashes; the checker removes them.

What it's called

Identifikačné číslo pre daň z pridanej hodnoty (IČ DPH). DPH is the Slovak name for VAT.

IČ DPH is SK plus 10 digits that usually match the tax ID (DIČ). It is different from the 8-digit company ID (IČO).

Registered, but invalid in VIES?

Businesses that aren't VAT payers but buy from, or sell services to, other EU countries register separately (under §7 or §7a) and get an IČ DPH used only for those cross-border transactions.

What trips people up

  • Slovak documents carry three numbers: IČO (8 digits), DIČ (10 digits) and IČ DPH (SK + 10 digits). Only IČ DPH is the VAT number.
  • Finančná správa also publishes VAT payers with grounds for deregistration. Buying from one can make you liable for its unpaid VAT.

Other ways to check

Finančná správa lists of VAT-registered entities. For cross-border trade, the VIES result above is the one to keep with your VAT records.
