Romanian VAT number check
Check a Romanian supplier's or customer's number against VIES, the European Commission's register. Below: the format, what it's called locally, and the mistakes that make a correct number fail.
Paste the number with or without the country prefix. Nothing you enter is stored.
The format
| Prefix | RO |
|---|---|
| After the prefix | 2 to 10 digits |
| Structure | One block of at least 2 and at most 10 digits. |
| Examples | RO12345678 or RO1234567890 |
You can paste the number with spaces, dots or dashes; the checker removes them.
What it's called
Cod de înregistrare în scopuri de TVA (cod TVA). TVA is the Romanian name for VAT.
It is RO followed by the company's fiscal code (CIF / CUI). A business that isn't registered for VAT uses the bare code without RO.
What trips people up
- Romanian numbers vary in length, from 2 to 10 digits. A short number isn't necessarily wrong.
- A CUI written without RO usually means the business isn't VAT-registered. Adding RO yourself doesn't make it a VAT number; check it.
Other ways to check
ANAF VAT register (Registru TVA). For cross-border trade, the VIES result above is the one to keep with your VAT records.
