Swedish VAT number check
Check a Swedish supplier's or customer's number against VIES, the European Commission's register. Below: the format, what it's called locally, and the mistakes that make a correct number fail.
Paste the number with or without the country prefix. Nothing you enter is stored.
The format
| Prefix | SE |
|---|---|
| After the prefix | 12 digits, ending in 01 |
| Structure | One block of 12 digits. |
| Example | SE123456789001 |
You can paste the number with spaces, dots or dashes; the checker removes them.
What it's called
Momsregistreringsnummer, often called VAT-nummer.
It is SE, the 10-digit organisation number (or a sole trader's personal identity number), then 01.
What trips people up
- A 10-digit organisation number on its own isn't a VAT number. Add SE in front and 01 at the end, then check it.
- Skatteverket says to verify EU VAT numbers with VIES; results from other services may not count as proof.
- A sole trader's VAT number contains their personal identity number, so treat it as personal data.
Other ways to check
VIES is the check to rely on for cross-border trade. The number is issued by Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency); if a correct number keeps showing invalid, the business has to take it up with them.
